Google Translate
Google Translate is a powerful feature-rich Droid apps that translates between over 50 languages worldwide while supporting speech input, text-to-speech, and dictionary results. The app has a simple interface that lets you type the sentence you want to translate and then pick the conversion language (say English to French) from a drop-down menu. You can also easily switch languages with a tap of a button. The translated result is displayed below, with a speaker icon to start the text-to-speech output.
The text-to-speech output is very useful and can come in very handy while traveling. Dictionary lookups happen automatically if there’s a match against the selected language dictionary. Translation does require a 3G or Wi-Fi connection, both of which are often missing while traveling outside the country (but that’s not Google’s fault). Translation accuracy is quite good, but don’t write your language class essays with it. The app is very fast, and will display translations almost instantly. Overall, this is a must-have application for those who travel or are learning a new language.
